Hello, beautiful, non-disabled, and disabled-bodied humans!

Meet Tanner Courtney—a disabled veteran who sustained a spinal cord injury on March 15, 2024. Just over a year ago, Tanner was struck head-on by a semi-truck early one morning on the way to work as a park ranger.

The injury resulted in an Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury at the T12 vertebra. Initially, Tanner was categorized as ASIA A (Complete), meaning there was no motor or sensory function below the injury, including no rectal sensation.

As the months passed, some functionality was restored. Tanner has since been reclassified as ASIA D (Incomplete), indicating partial sensory and motor function below the level of injury. Incomplete injuries statistically have a higher chance of functional recovery.

Immediately following the accident, Tanner had no movement or sensation below the waist. However, once the spinal shock and swelling subsided, neuropathic pain began to emerge—an indication that some nerve communication remained. Over time, limited movement and functionality in the legs started to return.

That said, the most difficult parts of this journey haven’t been the physical limitations. Instead, it’s been the bowel and bladder dysfunction, along with the mental and emotional adjustment to such a sudden, life-altering change. Tanner currently has no voluntary control over urination and must catheterize every few hours. A manual bowel program is also followed. Sexual function has also been affected. Because of all this, Tanner essentially entered a “monk mode” during the first year, focused entirely on healing and survival, while putting personal life on pause.

Why Now?

Doctors emphasize that the first 18 to 24 months post-injury are a critical window for recovery. What’s regained during this period often sets the foundation for long-term functionality. While healing can continue beyond that, Tanner is doing everything possible to maximize this crucial window.

Thanks to long-term disability coverage from a former employer, Tanner has been able to dedicate full time to rehabilitation. While there’s no current “cure” for spinal cord injuries, the most effective treatment remains intensive physical and occupational therapy to promote neuroplasticity—the brain and body’s ability to rewire and reroute signals.

One harsh reality: damaged spinal cord nerves don’t regenerate. That’s why most people with complete injuries remain in wheelchairs, regardless of how hard they train.

But This Is 2025—And There Is Real Hope

Stem Cell Therapy: A Promising Frontier

Although not a new concept, Stem Cell Therapy has shown groundbreaking results in clinical studies worldwide. Patients—especially those with incomplete injuries—are experiencing significant improvements in motor and sensory function, and in many cases, restored bowel and bladder control. That alone would be life-changing.

Currently, in the United States and Canada, the FDA does not allow for the expansion of Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells; therefore, this is not an approved therapy by FDA standards and is not covered by insurance. That being said, once the FDA approves the expansion of WJ MSC Stem Cells, clinical trials could begin for this revolutionary therapy, which would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single diagnosis code. However, international clinics such as BioXcellerator in Colombia offer this therapy with excellent outcomes and minimal risks. After extensive research, Tanner has chosen this clinic for treatment.

The Cost (After 10% Veterans Discount): $65,000

This treatment is costly for someone like Tanner and his family, who come from a lower-middle-class background. It will not be an option unless enough funds are raised from generous and compassionate supporters. The difference in Tanner receiving this treatment-or not—could mean a night-and-day transformation in how the rest of his life unfolds.

The Cost Breakdown Includes:

Four separate trips to BioXcellerator over one year

Stem cell application intrathecally + IV

35+ custom regenerative health therapies

Hotel + ground transportation

Travel medical insurance

Where You Beautiful Humans Come In

Tanner is doing everything possible—borrowing, hustling, and financing—but has reached the point of needing external support. This is the first time in his life he’s asked for financial help, but this treatment could drastically reshape his future.

Doctors and research suggest Tanner is an ideal candidate because:

He is 31 years old

He maintained a high fitness level both before and after the injury

The injury is Incomplete, not Complete

He is still within the critical 18–24-month recovery window

If Tanner had the funds, he would already be in treatment. But he doesn’t—and he has no family to turn to for financial help. A favorable legal settlement is expected in the next few years, but waiting that long could drastically reduce the therapy’s effectiveness. That’s why help is needed now.

Tanner’s promise: Whatever amount is raised for treatment will be personally matched—and more—toward nonprofit efforts once the settlement arrives. If the amount raised exceeds the cost of treatment, every extra dollar will go toward a greater mission.

A Bigger Vision: Healing for Many

Before the injury, Tanner was a passionate motorcyclist, ultra-runner, and fitness enthusiast. He was training for the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, prepping for The Tactical Games, and planning a return to the ultra-running scene. With sufficient support, he still plans to achieve his goal.

Though running isn’t yet possible, Tanner has regained enough strength to ride a recumbent bicycle, so he set a new goal:

RAGBRAI — a 406-mile, 7-day ride across Iowa

What began as a personal challenge has evolved into something more profound. This ride now represents a year of trials, transformation, growth, and gratitude. It’s no longer just about Tanner’s healing—it’s about raising awareness for:

Spinal cord injuries and invisible disabilities

Mental health and emotional recovery

Veteran support and reintegration

The power of community and resilience

The Ultimate Mission: A Healing Retreat in San Diego County

Alongside a team of fellow veterans, Tanner is working to build a first-of-its-kind wellness retreat for:

Veterans

First responders

Law enforcement

In partnership with the Buffalo Soldier San Diego Chapter and CLEEF Camp Lockett, this vision is being developed on 167 acres in East County, San Diego.

Planned features include:

Equine-assisted therapy

Full-service wellness center

Cold plunges & saunas

Archery & shooting range

Homesteading & farming education

Veteran transition programs & vocational training

Mental health retreats

Trails connecting to the Pacific Crest Trail

It will be a true sanctuary—a place for healing, rebuilding, and rediscovering purpose.

Why this mission? Because a veteran support program saved Tanner’s life after his injury. It gave him hope when he felt lost. Now, he wants to pass that gift on.

Tanner is currently pursuing a Master’s in Nonprofit Management & Leadership at the University of San Diego to bring this vision to life.

The Search, the Survival, and the Support
When Tanner and his two loyal dogs didn’t show up for work after the accident, a search began—both on the ground and online. One week later, thanks to a community-led effort and the guidance of search-and-rescue expert Bab Fry, a miracle unfolded: Julie was rescued on day 6 after being caught in a bush, and Whiskey made an incredible solo journey through the Cleveland National Forest—returning home on her own on the morning of day 7.

From crisis to recovery, #TeamTannerStrong started with love—and keeps growing through it.

Tanner commissioning as a Naval Officer

A Different Kind of Calling

After completing his time on active duty, Tanner was accepted into the Chaplain Candidate Program Officer (CCPO) program—a unique opportunity for those pursuing ministry while serving in the military.

Though Tanner was still a part of the CCPO program at the time of his injury, he had paused his seminary enrollment to focus on healing and working. While Tanner significantly utilized this time working to heal and navigate mental health challenges he experienced the first year leaving active duty, he continued to thoughtfully consider his next steps, including potential schools where he might resume his path toward chaplaincy.

His journey is a reflection of both service and faith—evolving, adapting, and still unfolding.

Tanner's Professional Headshot for his Job as a Park Ranger at Lake Jennings

A Season of Growth at Lake Jennings

In the spring of 2023, Tanner was hired as a Park Maintenance Ranger at Lake Jennings in Lakeside, California—a role that felt like a natural fit given his lifelong love for the outdoors and recreation. Friends who know him well would say that becoming a Park Ranger had always been on his radar, and landing the job marked the beginning of a meaningful new chapter.

Tanner saw this role as more than just a job; it was an incredible opportunity to spend his days outside doing work he loved, while also growing, learning, and—most importantly—beginning to heal truly. After separating from active duty, Tanner faced mental health challenges, and his time at Lake Jennings became a pivotal season of personal growth and reflection.

He often says that, at the time of his accident, he felt he was in his prime. The future looked bright, with exciting goals and opportunities just on the horizon. Although Tanner is no longer in that position, he remains deeply grateful for the experience. The friendships and mentorships he formed there were profoundly influential and will continue to be an essential part of his journey for years to come.

A Reunion to Remember

Pictured with his brother Tyler, who flew in from Iowa to visit and stay with him for a few weeks, this moment marked the first time Tanner and Tyler had spent quality time together since living under the same roof back in high school in 2011.

This was Tanner’s first Padres game of the season—and Tyler’s first ever—shortly after Tanner was released from a three-month inpatient hospital stay.

Tyler’s visit was a true highlight for them both, filled with meaningful reconnection and memories they’ll cherish forever.
