The Heartbreaking Reality for Incarcerated Mothers

Did you know that an astounding 80% of incarcerated women are also mothers? Sadly, many of these mothers are unable to connect with their children due to a lack of resources. When this happens, elderly guardians, such as grandmothers, are often left to care for the little ones. At AIM, we believe in supporting these moms and making a positive impact on both them and their children. We offer child-friendly visits monthly inside the prison--where kids can enjoy an interactive visit with their mother, playing games, working on crafts, and sharing lunch. We celebrate each child's birthday during their birthday month, and we are able to provide them with a small gift from their mother. The best part is taking pictures with their mothers--photos that will be printed so each child leaves with a picture of them and their mother. We also have a Storybook program where mothers read bedtime stories to their children via video recording. We then turn the videos into DVDs and mail them with the book to the child. This allows the children not only to hear their mother but see her!
Additionally, we provide school supplies, uniforms, and Christmas gifts for the children participating in our monthly visitation program. We can also support women in the community who are recently released and need support. We offer several life skill classes such as parenting, money management, and self-esteem while these moms are in prison. But our support doesn't stop there. We continue to assist these families even after the mothers are released through our group home and reentry programs. Unfortunately, our budget is limited. We are always looking for new supporters.
