For Black documentary filmmakers, storytelling is also an act of cultural preservation, truth-telling, and social impact. Yet too often, Black voices and perspectives remain underrepresented in the documentary landscape.
The Black Association of Documentary Filmmakers West (BADWest) exists to change that.
For decades, BADWest has served as a vital professional community for people of African descent working in documentary film, video, and emerging media. We provide opportunities for filmmakers to connect, collaborate, share resources, exchange ideas, and build meaningful professional relationships. Through networking events, workshops, mentorship, screenings, and educational programs, we help documentary storytellers strengthen their craft and advance their careers.
But our work goes beyond professional development.
BADWest actively advocates for the recognition, inclusion, and professional advancement of Black documentary filmmakers whose stories enrich our collective understanding of the world. We believe that authentic representation matters, and that Black creators should have equitable access to the resources, opportunities, and platforms needed to bring their stories to life.
