How It Works

While most birdathons center around finding as many bird species as you can in one day, we're shaking it up a bit. This free, inclusive event is meant to explore ways to maximize the joy that birds bring us, and no prior birding experience is necessary to participate.

When you join the campaign, you'll be able to choose how you'd like to #BirdYourWay, i.e. choose your preferred birding activity to track during our campaign (May 17 through May 20). That could mean...

  • tracking your total bird species found

  • finding as many female birds as you can
  • recording your hours spent in nature
  • tracking your lifers (a.k.a "new for you" birds!)
  • counting the number of bird species found while birding-in-place (including through virtual birding livestreams)
  • making note of the number of birding checklists you submit (via eBird or iNaturalist)

We recognize that birding can look different for everyone and we hope these options inspire and challenge you to bird YOUR way.

The Birdathon is free to join, but registration is recommended for you to get the most out of this peer-to-peer fundraiser. You'll receive your own personal fundraising page that will also grant you access to our community space— where you can share your bird joy and be inspired by fellow birders who are also birding for a cause!

A note on web accessibility: The Feminist Bird Club is dedicated to promoting inclusivity in birding, which includes accessibility of in-person and remote birding spaces. While FBC strives to make our web presence easy to navigate for everyone, we are sometimes limited by the functionality of a platform. This Birdathon campaign platform is powerful and helps us reduce many barriers, but it is not compatible with some web-accessibility needs. We understand any frustration or disappointment related to this limitation. If you need assistance registering for the Birdathon or simply want to receive updates without registering, please sign up via this Google form. You can also email us at fbcbirdathon@gmail.com and we will do our very best to accommodate your access needs.
