Become a "Superhero for the Sea"

$1,245Raised of $1m

Miami's 🧜‍♀️Mermaid Merle Liivand is on a Mission to Set a New World's Record!

PLEASE NOTE! Merle's Mermaid Swim has been postponed until April 25, due to high winds, rough seas and rip currents.

On April 25, 2026, Miami’s 🧜‍♀️Mermaid, Merle Liivand, will set a new Guinness World Record by swimming more than 50 kilometers (31.14 miles) with a monofin from Fort Lauderdale to South Beach to "Save the Sea" and raise funds to teach all kids to swim safely.

" I am doing this because I am 🧜‍♀️Mermaid. It's my job to protect the sea and sea creatures from thoughtless people who throw plastic and trash into the ocean," said Liivand, a former Baltic champion and breaststroke specialist from Estonia who lives in Miami Beach.

"But 🧜‍♀️Mermaid needs lots of help. That's why I am raising money for the International Swimming Hall of Fame's Every Child a Swimmer program; to make sure that every kid can learn to swim safely, so they can become Super Heroes of the Sea and help me protect the ocean."

I hope that you will register, take the Mermaid Pledge to become a "Superhero for the Sea" and make a contribution today.

If we work together, remember to breathe and NEVER GIVE UP, we can save the sea!

About Miami 🧜‍♀️Mermaid Merle Liivand's record breaking 🧜‍♀️Mermaid Swim

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — On April 25, 2026, Miami’s own “Mermaid” Merle Liivand intends to set a new Guinness World Record by swimming more than 50 kilometers (31.14 miles) with a monofin from Fort Lauderdale to South Beach. Her swim will raise awareness about plastic pollution and raise funds to teach lifesaving swimming skills to children.

Estonian "Eco-Mermaid" Merle Liivand is recognized for marathon-distance swims powered solely by her core and lower body using a monofin. Since 2019, Merle has set five Guinness World Records for distance swimming with a monofin, progressing from 10 km off Redondo Beach, California, to her current 50 km record set in April 2023 in Biscayne Bay, Miami.

Merle and her team will depart from the Dania Beach Jetty at 6:30 AM and expect to be at Haulover Inlet by early afternoon. Depending on current, wind and tides, she expects to arrive at the South Point Jetty around sunset. You can watch a flyover of her route on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRYd_tdVW_E

“I will be swimming past beautiful beaches and resorts that drive our region’s Blue Economy. Just beneath the surface are fragile coral reefs that need our protection,” said Liivand. “We must keep plastic and pollution out of the ocean and teach children to swim safely and connect them with the marine environment. Together, we can inspire the next generation to become Superheroes of the Sea.”

Liivand, a former Baltic swimming champion and breaststroke specialist from Estonia who now lives in Miami Beach, is raising funds for the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s Every Child a Swimmer program. Proceeds will expand access to water safety education and ensure more children learn essential lifesaving skills.

“Merle understands that making a difference requires action,” said Bruce Berman, founder of the Miami Beach Cupid Splash who served as Director of Strategy & Communications for Save the Harbor/Save the Bay in Boston for more than 30 years. “She leads by example and inspires everyone who cares about protecting our ocean, especially children.”

The swim is sponsored by the Miami Beach Cupid Splash and Miami-Dade Coastal Cleanup, Inc., with pledge proceeds benefiting Every Child a Swimmer.
