My Mission
Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to run the Orange County Marathon and fundraise in honor of Professor Phil Woodward. What started as a way to remember Phil quickly became one of the most joyful experiences of my college journey, rallying friends, sharing stories, and watching donations come in for such special cause. It reminded me that running can be more than just miles. Running became a way to remember Phil's legacy and worship the Lord.
Phil was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August of 2024 and courageously fought until November, never ceasing to share Christ’s love. I first met him in my freshman year at Biola and I quickly came to love his fully lectures, messy office, and endless encouragement. Seeing him around campus always lifted my spirits, and his care for each student left a lasting impact on me and many other students.
This past year, I’ve been blessed to grow closer to Phil’s wife, Cam. Her mentorship has meant so much to me, and she continues to carry Phil’s legacy with grace and strength. When she shared that Phil ran the very first OC Marathon back in 2004, it gave me great affirmation that this was the race I was supposed to run, and I am excited to do it again.
As I train, I hold onto Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” I know Phil now runs with no weight, fixing his eyes on Jesus, and I feel him cheering me on with every step.
This year I am running the Orange County Marathon with the goal of raising $1,000 for Project Purple. Project Purple supports pancreatic cancer patients and their families while funding research. I’m excited to fundraise again and celebrate Phil’s life and the legacy he left.
