Weston Needs YOU!
Arteriovenous Malformation may be a rare disease, but as AVM survivor Weston Carrothers knows well, it’s only RARE until it happens to YOU! Nearly 3 years post-stroke, and he, and wife Hayley, are running the Arizona Half Marathon in hopes of finding something that can also feel rare–help. They’re fundraising, going the extra mile for AVM research, and they need you to cheer them on. Whether you walk, run, bike or even read, learn how you too can RUN 4 AVM.
Why the Arizona Half Marathon?
On March 18th, 2020, Weston endured an excessive brain bleed due to a previously undiagnosed AVM (arteriovenous malformation). Because of this rupture, he was unconscious and rushed to the hospital where he slipped into a 3-day coma. His wife, Hayley, and their family were first told Weston might not survive, and that he pulled through that he may face extreme deficits.
Weston beat all odds and made a mostly full recovery.
He faced a lot of challenges during his recovery which is ongoing. Weston had to relearn to read, managed the pain and fatigue of PT, and had to find a completely new job because of his school committments.
Hayley says, "this year we run for Weston, run to raise money for TAAF, and run for all of the people affected by AVMs and aneurysms, those who physically can’t run or aren’t with us today.
We are made to do hard things and overcome life’s biggest challenges. Who better to help us than YOU?"
Where do you turn when you've been told you have a rare disease, but you've never even heard of an AVM?
Who will help you sift through the new neuro-jargon, the types of clinicians, and the ever-growing stress of your diagnosis?
How can one person/family affect change in this vast community?
These are but a few of the many questions patients and families face, folks like Weston and Hayley, when dealing with vascular malformations of the brain like AVM. Weston understands that at The Aneurysm and AVM Foundation (TAAF), answers these questions every day, and he's asking for YOUR HELP too.
How to Run 4 AVM?
Whether you walk, run, bike or even read, by participating in RUN 4 AVM, you will help serve a growing community in need of hope by raising awareness, providing resources and education, and dedicating funds to life-saving research. It's super simple!
1. Register Today! Click the "Join" button above. Come in on your own or form a team to challenge one another and help meet your goals.
2. Choose a Fundraising Goal: $50, $500 or $5000, every dollar makes a difference.
3. Choose an Activty to Track: Weston and Hayley are running the Arizona 1/2 Marathon, so you too could run. But you could also swim, bike, read, paint your house--as long as you love your activity.
We're tracking minutes of participation and have figured that 400 minutes is approximately 10 minutes per day. While we KNOW that Weston and Hayley will put in far more time, we thought 400 minutes was a fair goal for most of us to achieve.
4. Share & Be Social: Help put the FUN in fundraising by sharing your progress on social media and linking it here to the campaign. Compete against your bestie or ask your family or friends to contribute or join your team. Update often to showcase your progress and that we are all cheering for Weston & Hayley. Go Team!
