This goal reflects the urgent need to accelerate pediatric cancer research—especially when 41 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer every single day.
Be a part of The MTJ Effect and Join the Movement!
The MTJ Effect has teamed up with the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation to address an urgent need to fund childhood cancer research. Forty-one (41)* children are diagnosed each day with cancer in the US, and more children under 20 are lost to cancer than any other disease. Research is expensive and progress is limited by a lack of resources. The largest single funder of research, the federal government, directs just 4% of its cancer research budget to advancing lifesaving treatments for kids. Caring communities like ours can help fill the gap.
*The NIH’s 2024 estimates show 41 children per day will be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.—a step in the right direction from the previously reported 47.
Miller's Story & The MTJ Effect
At just 10 years old, Miller’s plans for his lacrosse season changed in an instant when he suffered a broken elbow. Instead of spending the spring on the field with his teammates, he found himself watching from the sidelines.
Rather than letting that setback define his season, Miller decided to turn it into an opportunity to make a difference.
While recovering, he joined the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation’s LaCROSSe Out Cancer® campaign with a simple goal: help children facing battles far greater than his own. As he learned about kids fighting pediatric cancer, Miller quickly realized that while his injury would heal, many children don’t get the chance to simply return to the game they love.
What began as a small fundraiser grew into something our family never could have imagined.
With the support of our incredible community, local businesses, teammates, friends, and countless generous donors, Miller organized scrap metal drives, community fundraisers, raffles, and awareness events. Together, those efforts raised more than $25,000 for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation to help fund life-saving childhood cancer research.
But the greatest impact wasn’t measured in dollars.
Throughout this journey, Miller met brave children and families whose strength and resilience forever changed his perspective on life and sports. He discovered that the greatest purpose of athletics isn’t found in wins, championships, or statistics—it’s found in using the game you love to make a difference in the lives of others.
That lesson became the foundation of The MTJ Effect.
The MTJ Effect exists to inspire young athletes to recognize the platform they have through sports and to use it to create kindness, compassion, leadership, and service in their communities. Whether it’s playing in honor of a child fighting cancer, serving a local cause, or simply choosing to lift up a teammate, we believe every young athlete has the power to create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the final score.
What started with one broken elbow became a journey of purpose.
What started as one fundraiser became a movement.
And what started with one young athlete continues to inspire others to Play for More.
