Takes place May 1-31, 2026

The VCE "Green Mountain Goatsuckers" are back!
Join us for the Vermont Center for Ecostudies’ 20th Annual Birdathon, a beloved tradition that raises funds for VCE, a wildlife research and conservation nonprofit based in White River Junction. As the official "hardcore" VCE team, the Green Mountain Goatsuckers will hustle across the state and bird for the cause this May.
New to Birdathon? It's like a walk-a-thon, but instead of counting miles, we’ll be counting bird species during one 24-hour period in May.
You can help us reach our fundraising goal by either making a donation today or by pledging to give a specific dollar amount per species we see on our big day.
Your generosity funds everything we do at VCE, including:
📈 Long-term monitoring: we publish and maintain decades-long datasets that reveal how wildlife responds to changing lands and climate.
💡Innovative conservation science: we conduct pioneering research to build knowledge and protect biodiversity.
🌎 International collaboration: our partnerships in the Caribbean foster local capacity to sustain ecosystems.
🌱 Mentorship for the next generation: we prepare interns and graduate students with career skills while collecting vital data.
To learn more about VCE visit us at vtecostudies.org.
You can make a donation or a per-species pledge on members' individual pages or to our team by clicking the donate button. You can also mail a check to Vermont Center for Ecostudies at PO Box 420, Norwich, VT 05055 and include our team name on the memo line.

Birdathon prep is underway!
The season (and competition) are heating up. The Green Mountain Goatsuckers have been deep in the eBird data, scouting target species and plotting our route for this year's Birdathon. To maximize species diversity, we're planning to bird the Champlain Valley, from around Middlebury to the Canadian border.
The magic of migration is that you can bird pretty much anywhere and pick up a ton of species. Other species depend on hitting the right spot at the right time. For example, VCE's tagged Bicknell's Thrush are only just returning from the Dominican Republic and won't be back in time for our Birdathon outing, and late-migrating species like Bay-breasted Warbler will still be scarce, but other rare breeders should be on location (looking at you, Cerulean Warbler).
Some of our biggest target species are limited to a few very specific habitats and locations. Those are the ace up our sleeve. Stay tuned...
