Canada's Longest Open Water Swim Challenge

The Big Effort Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2022 by three friends and athletes who wanted to inspire a new genre of fundraising through extreme sporting events. Our focus is on others: helping people push their own physical limits, thus providing both physical and mental health, meanwhile supporting the community and its environment.

The Big Effort Swim is an inaugural open-water endurance event held at Christina Lake in the Kootenay Boundary Region of British Columbia, Canada. It’s organized by a volunteer-led roster of passionate athletes whose goal is to bring together nature, community, charity, and fun.

On August 19th 2023 – the day of our 2nd Big Effort Swim across Christina Lake – we made the difficult decision of cancelling our 18km and 36 swim distances due to wild fires affecting British Columbia and the North West Territories in Canada. These fires have forced thousands of evacuations and resulted in heavy smoke across the provinces, they were even felt at Christina Lake Provincial Park.

While we were able to welcome swimmers participating in the 750m, 2km, 4km and kids swims later in the day, we have extended deferrals for TWO YEARS.

We are running a modified VIRTUAL BIG EFFORT SWIM 2023 this summer and have extended the August 19th event to September 23. All swimmers registered to complete the 18km and 36km swims are invited to complete their swim effort at some point in the extended time frame.

All additional donations received on our platform will directly benefit wild fire relief efforts in British Columbia.
