Behind the Gates of the McNear Brickyard for Swift Migration
$200 starting bid
Starts May 9, 8:00 AM PDT
Item description
Every fall, tens of thousands of Vaux's Swifts migrate south for the winter. Historically, these birds roosted overnight in hollowed-out old-growth redwoods, but as these trees have been lost, the swifts have adapted to using chimneys along the West Coast. The McNear Brickyard in San Rafael is home to three such chimneys and every September, between 25,000 and 65,000 Vaux's Swifts swirl overhead before funneling down into them to rest for the night.
Join trip leader Rusty Scalf for an exclusive behind-the-gates view of this breathtaking spectacle. Watching tens of thousands of birds spiral into a chimney at dusk is a truly singular experience, there is simply nothing else like it.
The event will take place on Friday, September 18, from 6:00–8:00 pm. Bring lawn chairs and picnic fare and settle in for an unforgettable evening.
As an optional add-on, Rusty will lead a birding trip at Loch Lomond Marina Park beforehand for those who wish to make a full afternoon of it.
