$250 starting bid
Starts May 9, 8:00 AM PDT
Item description
Mono Lake is not just one of California's most other-worldly landscapes—it's a key Pacific Flyway stop for multiple migrating bird species and a breeding site for 10 percent of the world's California Gulls.
Enjoy a two-night's stay and a day of guided birding with two expert Mono Lake birders, Randy Arnold and Greg Knight.
Randy and Greg will host two people in their new home in Mono City. They have a spectacular view of the Mono Basin to include the Sherwins in Mammoth Lakes. Randy and Greg are monomaniacs. Both are Mono Lake Volunteers trained as docents to provide interpretive services for visitors. Greg is a trustee on the Mono Basin Historical Society. Randy is a top birder in Mono County consistently in the top ten on ebird for species. He has been involved in supporting the Mono Lake Committee going back to 1980, just two years after Sally and David Gaines established the organization. Randy and Greg love to bring birders to the Mono Basin to enjoy our many species including our iconic species of migratory birds. The Mono Basin offers a wide variety of habitats from 6,000’ to 10,000’. Randy and Greg will enjoy sharing some of their favorite places based on the species our guests would like to possibly see.
Visit must take place between June and October. Package provides two night's lodging for two people, including a dinner and two breakfasts, plus a day of guided birding.
August and September are peak times to see migrating grebes and phalaropes at Mono Lake. Wilson's Red-necked Phalaropes arrive in massive numbers (up to 80,000+) in mid-summer to fall to feed and molt before migrating to South America. Up to 1 million Eared Grebes arrive in the fall to feed on the lake's abundant brine shrimp. Meanwhile, during the summer the lake is a nesting site for up to 50,000 California Gulls.
The fair market value for this item is estimated at $500.
