The first Arizona Roller Derby team was named Tent City Terrors, after the infamous outdoor Maricopa County jail. Derby in the early years was more theatrical - team names and outfits were used as a form of reclamation, here they aimed to critique the inhumane institution. As the league matured and embraced a more inclusive approach to marginalized communities, it jettisoned this glorification of prison culture and reformed all of its team names to ensure they represent the organization’s values.
