The Jam Start is the beginning of each round of skating. Jammers, wearing the star, line up at the jam line behind the blockers. This series illustrates the evolution of the jam start. In the early years, jammers started in a crouched position with hands on the ground, similar to a track start. Today, jammers start upright - some choose to start on the line, others float, while some start 20 feet back to get a running start into the pack of blockers.
