FAQ
Q. What is Ride For A Child?
Twenty-one years ago, Candlelighters family member Dick Hartung rode in Cycle Oregon in honor of his daughter, Jill. During his ride, he started a fundraising appeal that went out to his family, friends, and business associates. The ride was a huge success. Not only did he challenge himself and conquer the week of riding, he honored Jill’s life by enriching the lives of other families impacted by childhood cancer. In 2002, Dick raised over $12,000. Now, with a goal of $195,000 in 2022, Ride For A Child has raised millions for Candlelighters For Children With Cancer and continues to be Candlelighters’ largest fundraiser of the year.
Q. When is Ride for a Child?
If you are participating in Cycle Oregon with the Ride for a Child team, the Cycle Oregon classic event takes place September 10-17, 2022. Whether you are participating in Cycle Oregon or at your own pace, you'll record your miles on this website for the duration of the fundraising campaign, April 1 - Sep 30, 2023.
Q. How Does Ride For A Child partner with Cycle Oregon?
When you register for Ride For A Child, you commit to fundraise a minimum of $1,000 for Candlelighters For Children With Cancer. In return, if you are participating in Cycle Oregon, Candlelighters provides your tent and porter service for the entire Classic event, free of charge. At the Cycle Oregon Classic event, you’ll receive your Ride For A Child jersey and access to the designated Candlelighters’ camp area, for socializing, snacks, and drinks. You’ll be part of a community, riding to make a difference, together.

Q. What Happens After I Register?
In the next few months, we’ll introduce this year’s Honored Children, who you will be riding in honor of throughout Ride For A Child 2023. Ask any past rider and they’ll tell you: Some of the most motivating moments of Ride For A Child come from connecting with your Honored Child through emails, letters, pizza parties, and a ride-out event. In addition, you’ll join a community of riders for training rides throughout the summer!
