Estell's Story

At 70 years old, Estell is living the life he never dreamed he would have. In fact, there was a point where Estell didn’t imagine living his life at all.

Twenty years ago, he had a chance encounter with a compassionate stranger who was able to literally talk him off of the ledge. This led him to seek help and he found MiSide.

Estell is no stranger to heartache, having lost his parents and siblings, he could not see a way forward. During such a difficult time, he also lost his job and his home. He did not know what to do to provide for his wife and children, and he thought they would be better off without him.

“I almost ended my life…I was in so much pain.”

Thankfully, Estell found MiSide and began an integrated treatment program that involves case managers, psychiatrists, social support groups, and primary care physicians.

“I’m glad I came here to get the help I needed.”

Through his treatment at MiSide, Estell has been able to strengthen his relationships with his family. His relationship with his wife has never been so strong in all 45 years of their marriage.

Once Estell was able to join the Healthy Living Group, his life changed for the better. It took him 5 years to feel comfortable working with a group, but now he has a whole new outlook. He sees that he can not only help himself, but he can help others too.

Estell gives back to his community, just like you. A member of the Consumer Advisory Board, he advocates for those who need treatment like him. He uses his voice to reduce the mental health stigma for the good of his community.

“Mental health is no joke.”

He is passionate about ensuring that these programs remain accessible to the people in the community that need them. “The community needs MiSide here,” Estell knows how important it is to have access to services in your own backyard.

“You have got to have the funds to bring people this help.”

Can Estell, and so many others like him, count on you? Will you make sure that the services they so desperately need get the necessary support?

You have showed up for Estell for 20 years. Now, more than ever, mental health services are vital to the success of individuals and their community. Show up this year, not just for Estell, but for all of Metro Detroit.

Thank YOU for always being there. Thank YOU for changing lives.
