Michelle was born in Bari, Italy in 1982 and spent her childhood living most of each year in New York City and every holiday and summer in Italy. Her formative years were in Chicago's North Shore, where she now lives and works. After completing her undergraduate studies in painting and sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago she went on to receive her master’s degree in art therapy and counseling from the Adler School of Professional Psychology. She is currently an art therapist in private practice and also works with children in a therapeutic day school.
The extensive traveling Michelle experienced as a child and the exposure she had to art all over Europe serves as the core for her inspiration. Early on she became enthralled by the metaphors and allegories of the Bible as well as the powerful narratives of Greek and Roman Mythology, specifically the epic poems of Homer and Vergil. While she draws heavily on these ancient themes, they are solely departures and serve as opportunities to alter narratives, revise meaning, and change outcomes. These investigations into the past are brought to the foreground with attention to the current world we live in. Michelle believes this allows the viewer to draw connections from the familiarity of the ancient and classic aesthetic to current and relevant matters. The research for making art is constant for her and she has found that everything she does in daily life seems to connect her back to her work. For Michelle, making art is about beginning something, conceiving the psyche of the piece, and then getting lost in the process. For her this is what makes painting a great challenge and source of satisfaction all at once.
