Christmas Bird Count with FBC Western Mass

Registration is now closed.

Detailed event information

Location and parking

Bramble Hill Farm at 593 S Pleasant St, Amherst, MA

This event will take place at Bramble Hill Farm in South Amherst. The primary parking area is at the front (the eastern end) of the property, along and visible from Rt. 116.

You can join us for a stationary count (10 - 11 AM), a bird walk (11 AM - 1 PM), or both. Registration is required.

Accessibility

This event will be held outdoors. The stationary bird count will be a short walk (~500 ft) from the primary parking area. Limited parking is also available at the count area, and will be reserved for disabled participants.

The count site has a bench and two boulders to sit on. We recommend bringing your own seating. Mobility-impaired folks may also remain seated in their vehicles during this count.

The bird walk will be on a flat, mile-long loop trail that may have roots, rocks, mud, ice or snow. We anticipate variable trail conditions depending on the weather, and will modify the event if the walk becomes too strenuous.

This event requires (K)N95 type masks and we ask that you step away from the group to snack or hydrate. This event location is generally sensory-friendly and some distance away from traffic. Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms and a warming area will also be available near the stationary count site and parking area.

What to bring

A KN95/ N95 mask and binoculars, but we will have extras! A well-fitting mask should not fog eyeglasses. If a disability prevents you from masking, please contact us beforehand to discuss alternative ways to practice community care.

Dress warmly in layers, including a hat and gloves. We strongly recommend sturdy winter boots, hand/toe warmers, and ice grips/cleats.

Please bring your own water bottle or a warm beverage, and any snacks or medications you might need.

Other considerations

To prepare for the event, especially if you’ve never participated in a Christmas Bird Count before, we recommend that you watch the recording of this training that was organized by the Northampton Christmas Bird Count compilers last year.
