Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect compatible with life in the United States. The Spina Bifida Association of New York State (SBANYS) helps support the estimated 4,000 individuals living with Spina Bifida in our state.

SB is a neural tube defect (NTD) and are conditions of the brain, spine, and spinal cord. SB can happen anywhere along the spine if the neural tube does not close, which causes the backbone that protects the spinal cord to not form and close as it should.

There are three main types of SB which characterize the type of opening and the status of the nerves at those openings. SB occulta is the mildest form, and myelomeningocele is the most severe.

Our son, Christian, was born with Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele and Hydrocephalus.
