It is July... and now my 22nd year to participate in the Swim Across the Sound. This is my annual fundraising swim to support St. Vincent's Hospital and cancer patients. We will be swimming from Port Jefferson, NY back to Bridgeport, CT.
This is a relay and we will be swimming 15.5 miles accompanied by a boat, taking turns in the water and completing it in 6-7 hours.
There continues to be chaos in the world and cancer continues to upend people's lives. The need is ever present to help with the old and the new diagnoses.
Our team is the New Canaan Cross Currents. We are all part of the training group at the New Canaan YMCA. We want to set a faster pace in the fight against cancer. I am always happy to continue to help more swimmers experience the joys and the challenges of open water swimming and to extend the reach of this fundraiser. Eager to jump into the water, we all hope to be able to support as many patients and families as we can.
The money that we raise for the Swim Across the Sound goes to help pay for free cancer screenings for the uninsured or underinsured, rides to appointments and other essential items like rent or wigs or groceries.
If you know of anyone who has been through this and you've seen the toll that it takes-even for those with family support and financial resources, you can imagine what these bits of help mean to those who really need them.
As a doctor and a swimmer, the Swim Across the Sound gives me motivation and inspiration. I hope you will support our swim this year.
