This is Jodi's story, in her own words:

Hi, I’m Jodi Taylor. I was diagnosed in July 2018 with Stage 4 breast cancer with metastasis to my bones. I was 37 years old at the time and do not have a family history of breast cancer.

I thought I had pinched a nerve in my neck during a DIY bathroom remodel. Over the next few weeks my pain worsened and my left hand was becoming numb. I went to the ER and asked for an MRI. The ER doctor told me there was a spot found in my cervical spine suspected to be cancer, and that I would need emergency surgery that day to stabilize my spine.

The following week they completed the biopsy and confirmed my diagnosis. I wore a neck brace for 3 months, then had radiation to my spine. Since I am stage 4, I am always on some form of treatment. When one stops controlling the cancer, we move on to the next. I have been on several oral therapies, injectable therapies, had additional surgeries and more rounds of radiation as bone spots have popped up. This fall, I started my first IV chemotherapy, which has felt like a big and sometimes scary milestone.

My kids are now 12 and 8. My husband, Scott, and I try to spend as much time making as many cherished memories as we can. For me, gratitude is so important. Focusing on all the good things in our lives helps take away some of the darkness that cancer brings.

When we feel upset about my diagnosis, we think of all the good that has come into our lives because of it. Friends and family that have supported us, new friends we have made in the cancer world, trips we have taken that probably would have been put off if not for my diagnosis. I’m grateful for every day with my family and hope for many more years to come!
