Reforesting Diasporic Jewish Imagination

Our Mission

Hereland is reforesting a living diasporic cultural ecosystem—and inviting you to help it grow.

We are an international collective of Jewish artists, activists, and researchers collaborating across disciplines and communities. Our work includes artist-led workshops, international exhibitions, in-person retreats, and online educational resources, all rooted in ancestral memory and radical imagination.

We believe that we remember best in relation. Our collective memory is a collaboration, and as such, our work seeks to be both reparative and intercultural.

In a time of rising fascism and ethnonationalism worldwide, and as reactionary forces mobilize narratives of Jewish memory and safety in service of militarism and supremacy, Hereland cultivates spaces of remembrance that honor the cultures of all peoples while uplifting traditions of nonviolence and mutual care.

Today, we are raising funds to support our research and artistic production in Poland, culminating in an exhibition at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

This July, we will gather for an artist residency in the Białowieża Forest and at the former synagogue of Rabbi Aaron Shmuel Tamares in Milejczyce, where we will host a Shabbat weekend of communal learning. In November, we will present this work at the POLIN Museum—bringing our research and creative process to fruition while deepening collaborations between diasporic Jewish artists, Polish communities, and activists engaged in refugee justice at the Poland–Belarus border, tracing the continuities between past and present forms of violence.

Our goal is to raise $35,000, with $15,000 needed by July 1 to support the first phase of research, development, and production leading to our final exhibition. Your support will help cover:

- Accommodation, transportation, and meals during the July residency

- Film personnel and equipment

- Costume materials

- Participation of local activists and cultural workers, including members of Grupa Granica, who provide aid to refugees along the EU’s eastern border

- Artist stipends

It will also expand our community engagement through a communal weekend in Milejczyce:

- Welcoming new cohorts of activists into Yiddishland

- Engaging teachings on liberation, ecology, and diasporism

- Strengthening relationships with local communities

We’ve created a short film in collaboration with filmmaker Alexander Fry to offer a deeper sense of our collective practice, It provides a glimpse into our vision and underscores the urgency of revitalizing Jewish imagination in this historical moment.
