Brett's Bass Fund was created in loving memory of one of my closest, and oldest friends. I knew Brett practically all my life (we met when I was two!) He taught me about music, life, food, and friendship.
(THE DRAWING IS OFFICIALLY OVER AND WINNERS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN. THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED!! CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS!!
Win a pair of tickets to an Avatar: The Last Airbender 20th Anniversary Concert, an ATLA Book 1 vinyl signed by me and series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, or a signed ATLA Book 2 vinyl! Details below.)
Growing up, I idolized Brett. He was touring Europe with a metal band when I was just discovering Metallica. He taught me the modes in 10 minutes when no one else could get me to understand them. I watched him perform on live TV with Jimmy Page on Saturday Night Live. He turned me on to James Brown, the Meters, Funkadelic, Willie Bobo, Roy Ayers, Maceo, and eventually we formed a funk band. He never pushed; I had no idea he was teaching... I grew so much from our friendship. Brett was a huge part of my musical journey and no doubt an essential piece of what inspired me to become a composer. He was quite simply the coolest, sweetest, raddest, funniest, most creative, and most humble person. I loved him.
In Brett's memory and in honor of his beautiful, generous spirit, Brett's Bass Fund was established with the purpose of providing the gift of learning the bass to people who have the dream but may not have the means.
Please support this cause by becoming a sponsor for my May practice campaign, or by joining the campaign and committing to 15 minutes of practice a day throughout May!
If you decide to do your own campaign, you can practice anything that makes sound - a conventional instrument, your voice (also an instrument), computer music (also an instrument), making sound with rubber bands (certainly can be an instrument), deep listening, something you've been meaning to explore but haven't yet found the motivation... You don't even have to call yourself a musician (labels suck anyway). It's really easy to sign up, it's free, and I guarantee it will be so good for you while also benefitting others.

Last practice of the Noise-a-thon. I didn't want to stop today and I don't want to stop in general. It never ceases to amaze me how much a person can get out of just 15-25 minutes of committed, daily practice. It really is all about the commitment. I've found the sporadic 2-3 hr sessions once or twice a week to be almost useless in comparison.
My deepest gratitude to everyone who has donated or raised funds for this cause. You will collectively make a major difference for the future scholarships recipients. The gift you've given is profound.
Additionally, I hope those who've participated in their own practice-a-thon (aka Noise-a-thon) have had a fulfilling, inspiring month of growth.
Much love,
Jeremy
P.S. We will be picking the three winners of the ATLA giveaway in the next few days using a random selection process. Someone from Brett's Bass Fund will reach out to the winners to let them know which prize they've won, get their info, etc. xoxo
