Liam's Light: Our Fight Against Childhood Alzheimer's
In 2021, our world changed forever when our son Liam was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Disease Type C (NPC), a rare and fatal genetic disorder often called "Childhood Alzheimer's." This devastating condition causes cholesterol to build up in cells, leading to irreversible damage to the brain, nervous system, and organs. Children like Liam rarely survive beyond five years after diagnosis, but we refused to accept that fate. That's why we founded Life For Liam & Friends Foundation in early 2023—to raise awareness, support families, and fund groundbreaking research for a cure.
Partnering with Dr. Mark Schultz at the University of Iowa's Shultz Laboratory, we've made incredible strides in a gene therapy that restores the missing NPC1 protein in cells, and have seen promising results in preliminary mouse trials. These advances not only offer hope for NPC but could benefit Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
