Counting Birds for Conservation

We're excited to take part in the San Diego Birdathon, a birding challenge supporting San Diego Bird Alliance’s local conservation, education, and advocacy efforts that benefit birds, other wildlife, and all who enjoy them.

Here's what we're doing:

  • Similar to a walkathon where you count steps and raise money, the Birdathon is an opportunity to raise funds for San Diego Bird Alliance as teams count bird species. We are one of several teams participating, but clearly the best! You can learn more about the overall Birdathon fundraiser by clicking the logo at the top-left of this page.

  • Each team's bird count must take place in a 24 hour period between April 11 and May 11.

  • We're planning on a full day of birding on Saturday, April 26 from the coast to the desert to maximize our number of species seen. This will likely involve a mix of birding together and separately, but we'll be in touch all day via a lively group chat.

  • We are hoping to raise over $2,500 in donations and observe at least 175 bird species.

  • We're gonna do the whole thing in bowling shoes! Okay, maybe not...

Sign up to join us or to make a donation here on our team page. We'll share more specific details on where exactly we'll meet as the time gets closer with those who have signed-up.

Please consider supporting our efforts by giving to our page. You can leave a flat donation to our team or make a pledge per species when donating to a team member (both are tax-deductible). We hope you can spare a few dollars for our feathered friends!

We're so grateful for your support on behalf of the birds we love. You can find more information about the San Diego Bird Alliance, their mission, and current conservation initiatives here at their website.

Weather conditions messed up our timeline, so we didn't make it back to the coast before sunset. We missed 35 or so species we expected at the coast, but we did end up with 100 species, including 3 lifers, despite not getting the usual gulls, shorebirds, etc. we would have seen if we would have stayed on schedule.
