70/70 bird species found

Oct 17-20, 2025

I’m birding for a better world! Can you cheer me on?

I'm excited to be a part of Feminist Bird Club's Birdathon for Birders of Palestine! Our birding community is coming together to celebrate the inclusive nature of bird joy while fundraising for Birders of Palestine, an independent project fundraising to support Palestinian birdwatchers.

Please help me reach my goal by leaving a flat donation or making a pledge to support my birding efforts! Your support will help provide critical funds to birders and their families as they try to survive genocide and ethnic cleansing, and encourage their love for birding.

You can also support the Palestinian birders and their families directly by purchasing a print on the Birders of Palestine website. Submit your receipt here and note that your purchase is to support my fundraising campaign!

Thank you for considering and stay tuned for my birding updates! 🐦

By the skin of my teeth I met my goal of 70 species! I had an early doctors appt and thus thought early birding would help me win, but everywhere was inactive. I trawled ebird for hotspots and EMH had checklists in locations that showed birds I needed.

I finally ran into brown creepers, cedar waxwings, and common ravens that had been frustratingly and unusually absent in my usual birding spots. I also was able to see a northern shoveler who chose to hang out with a group of ruddy ducks. And #70 was a magnificent merlin who let me get a dark photo before flying off. I tried to get just one more in case I made a mistake, but alas.

Competitive/marathon birding is definitely not going to be a regular thing for me. I usually enjoy birding regardless of species count but this last day made that tough. However, I am glad to be repping Palestinian Birders and I hope this helps bring more attention to their stories. I have learned a lot from it all.

Thank you so much again everyone. This was quite a ride. I am going to go lay down for a year or so.

I knew it was going to rain today, but was not prepared for how hard it did. I figured Moraine would still have activity, but everywhere except for the waterfowl observation area had very little action, but I did get some yellowlegs and more duck species. Luckily I looped back around to the deck as another species showed up. I enjoyed watching all of the ducks splish splashin. AF thankfully let me know that the mute swan who ditched me yesterday was back, so I stopped at Marshall lake on the way home and snagged them.

I also did not realize I had another day yet to hopefully snag 6+ more species. Lookin for fallouts tomorrow. Then I rest.

Today was... interesting. Ran into road closures, too much sun, resident odd birds deciding not to show up during my special weekend, and so on. But, for every detour, I was able to score at least one species I had not found yet. Still, I have my work cut out for me tomorrow to get to 70 species. If I can run into a bunch of migrating ducks or warblers that might do it, but I have to get a bit luckier than I was today.

The highlights of the day were getting to meet the red-headed woodpeckers' juveniles all grown up and cacheing acorns with their parents and the groups of wood ducks swimming on a perfectly lit lake which reflected the setting sun and fall leaves.

I haven't quite figured out where to go tomorrow. I have so many ideas and not enough energy or time. Hopefully I can make it to 70 or more!
