I'm doing the 28x28 Mobility Challenge!

I am a unilateral below the knee amputee. I am joining the 28 x 28 mobility challenge to make sure every BODY has the orthotic or prosthetic necessary to move.

I currently use a “basic” leg covered by my insurance that allows me to move around the house and community to complete errands comfortably. And I am grateful for that, my independence is important to me. HOWEVER, when I am out being active, I overcompensate with my sound leg, causing so much discomfort that it leads to pain and fatigue. In addition to that, my amputated leg experiences pain, skin irritations and sores because my current leg is not designed to dampen the impact or provide the mobility necessary for the activity. Sometimes this deters me from participating because I mentally cannot cope with the pain and consequences that day. This shouldn’t be acceptable. In my experience, insurance is the roadblock because an activity leg is not medically necessary. Movement is a basic human right.

I recently participated in a running clinic where I had access to a walking/running hybrid foot for 2 hours. What a difference it made. Not only did it absorb the impact of running, it also directed the energy needed to propel my foot to the next step. I felt free and empowered! It gave me the confidence to run and feel good!
