In Honor of Joe Metlick

This year’s Heroes Pull is held in honor of Joe, a dedicated supporter, volunteer, and champion of Special Olympics Kansas whose impact continues to be felt across the state.

Joe had a passion for the simple things—hunting, working on projects in his garage, and most importantly, giving back to his community. Alongside his wife Jane, Joe was named Special Olympics Kansas Volunteer of the Year in 2011, a reflection of the time, energy, and heart they poured into supporting our athletes.

Joe’s legacy is perhaps best seen through his work with the Northwest Kansas Truck Convoy. After attending his first convoy in Salina in 2006—where he raised the most funds and led the trucks—Joe was inspired to bring the event to western Kansas. In 2007, he helped establish the Northwest Kansas Truck Convoy in Colby, growing it into a powerful tradition over the next 14 years. Through his leadership, the convoy raised more than $600,000, engaged over 1,000 truckers, and created unforgettable experiences connecting athletes and supporters.

But beyond the numbers, Joe will always be remembered for the joy he brought to others. He was happiest when he was with Special Olympics Kansas athletes—sharing a smile, a laugh, and a helping hand whenever it was needed.

Joe passed away in 2021, but his spirit lives on through the athletes he supported and the community he helped build. He is deeply missed and forever a part of the Special Olympics Kansas family. As we come together for this year’s Heroes Pull, we do so in Joe’s honor—celebrating his legacy and continuing the work he cared so deeply about.
