Thank You for Being on the Road to Ten with Us! We Couldn't Have Done it Without You!
I came to Casita Copan in 2013 by accident, only a year after it began in 2012. I was supposed to be in Honduras for only two months as a medical brigade nurse volunteer and Spanish student, but the universe had other plans for me when it put Emily Monroe, the director of Casita Copan, in my path.
I remember our first meeting in Cafe San Rafael feeling inspired by the mission and vision of Casita Copan that Emily and several concerned people from Copan Ruinas had built: To prevent child abandonment by providing a day care for single mothers and children. Watching the children and mothers flourish in a place that felt like home, that was safe and encouraging and helped them reach their full potential warmed my heart, and I had to stay to be part of this project.
Two months in Honduras turned to three years, and before I knew it, this little day care of 13 children had grown to be a home to 50 plus children. What was once just a simple daycare became a flourishing center for growth for our Casita families and children who were able to access an increasing number of programs like the Youth Program, giving participating children the opportunity to gain skills for adult life through leadership development and education.
Being part of Casita Copan has been the best and most important part of my life and I couldn't thank you all more for being part of this journey with me, with all of us. We have formed a community across the globe to change lives forever in this tiny little town of Copan Ruinas showing that when as humans we come together regardless of faith, race, social status, or politics to do something with love, we can accomplish great things.
Hope you will all join us on the road in May walking, running, biking, or doing all three activities to celebrate these amazing ten years of accomplishment and to raise money for future years as we continue to grow and better the Children's Home here in Honduras bringing families and community together to be stronger for future generations.

The Road to Ten Began in 2012...
2012: Casita Copan started as only a small daycare with thirteen children and big dreams.
2013: The Casita family moved into the Children's Center, which expanded services to more children and mothers providing nutrition, education, life-skills training, mental and medical health aid and support for single mothers. Because of the Women's Literacy and Life Skills Education Program, mothers for the first time began reading alongside their children and Casita celebrated its acceptance as an official 501 (c) (3) nonprofit.
2014: Casita officially became an orphanage accepting 13 children into its care who had been living in abhorrent conditions in a corrupt orphanage that was shut down by the government. For the first time, these children had a safe place to call home and Casita began work to develop its Casitas Program, providing little foster homes for these children.
2015: Casita Copan opened up three casitas with four foster moms working to keep siblings together in a stable, loving and supportive environment within their own community.
2016: The Youth Program began which provided children with the opportunity to receive internships and participate in workshops to gain skills to help them succeed once they graduated out of Casita Copan.
2017: Casita Copan had 90 monthly sponsors from all over the world and continued to expand services to the community.
2018: Casita held two local events in Copan with 42 local business partners bringing communities together to create positive change.
2019: Casita's first graduates from the program, Eduardo and Velkis, found jobs and their own apartments transitioning successfully out of Casita Copan and into to community on their own. Casita Copan also received certification from the government’s child services agency, DINAF (Dirección de Niñez, Adolescencia, y Familia), and entered into a formal agreement with them, benefiting its services and expanding impact.
2020: Casita Copan successfully provide meals for its families during quarantine. It also started the Mercadito Program, or little market, helping mothers struggling with income during the pandemic to develop their own micro-businesses and remain financially independent during hard times.
2021: Casita bought its very own home and property, ensuring its future for years to come. It also reunited one of its children with their father bringing a family back together who had long been separated.
2022: Over the years, medical brigades, church groups, construction crews, engineers, artists, the copan community, and so many others from all over the world have came and went through Casita's doors and what was once a little seed of an idea has grown into a garden of possibility. Salud! to celebrating ten years as an organization and looking forward to many more as Casita Copan moves into its new home and builds dreams for its future.
