Let's Walk to Support Latina's Future in STEM

In light of recent federal budget cuts to key science and diversity initiatives, Latinas in STEM (LIS) is launching the Walk Across the Stage walk-a-thon campaign, May 15 through June 12, 2026, to support Latinas pursuing STEM degrees. These cuts threaten to widen existing gaps in representation and opportunity within the scientific community.

National Science Foundation (NSF): Facing a 55% budget cut, about $4 billion, jeopardizing numerous research initiatives and educational programs. (ACS C&EN)

National Institutes of Health (NIH): In $2.3 billion in grants were frozen or terminated and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities was eliminated. (Science)

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs: Executive Order 14151 mandates the termination of all federal DEI initiatives, impacting support systems for underrepresented groups in STEM.

These changes threaten to reverse progress in diversifying the STEM fields and supporting students from marginalized communities.

"Walk Across the Stage" aims to counteract these setbacks by:

LIS Scholarships
The LIS Scholarships provide critical financial assistance to Latinas enrolled in 2- or 4-year colleges pursuing STEM degrees. These funds help cover the cost of essential materials—such as textbooks, lab supplies, and technology—ensuring students are equipped to succeed in their coursework.
