What's the Bay Birding Challenge?

The Bay Birding Challenge on Saturday, April 25th, is a one-day team birding competition for Golden Gate Bird Alliance’s annual Birdathon fundraiser.

How It Works

On Saturday, April 25, between the hours of 5am and 9pm, birding teams (3-10 birders each) will compete against each other on two fronts:

1) Observe the most bird species in one day in the Bay (eligible counties: San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Napa, and Sonoma.

2) Fundraise the most donations through peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns.

Prizes will be awarded to the team with the highest species count, the team with the highest fundraised amount, and the individual with the highest fundraised amount (between both the Bay Birding Challenge and Individual peer-to-peer fundraisers)

Funds raised help Golden Gate Bird Alliance protect birds in the Bay Area.

Whether you wish to compete on a team or support from the sidelines through per-species pledges and donations, it's easy to participate in this community event!

It is completely free to participate. All birding skill levels are welcome!

Burrowing Owls

These charismatic hunters return to the Bay shoreline each winter. Previous Birdathoners have supported the ongoing monitoring along the Berkeley shoreline, helping advocate to make this species fully protected under the Endangered Species Act. Photo by Doug Donaldson.
