The Founders Cup

Be the winning team and take home the Founders Cup! Breakwater Yacht Club (Breakwater Sailing Center) is a not-for-profit community sailing center located in Sag Harbor, NY. Breakwater’s mission is to promote the sport of sailing and sailboat racing by providing access for all members of the community. We aim to ensure that sailors learn in a safe, fun environment and maintain the integrity of the sport while racing.

We are looking to raise $15,000 towards our youth and adult sailing program.

The History of Breakwater Yacht Club

The spirit of the Sag Harbor Cup is to showcase how sailing is a sport that can be enjoyed by our entire community, regardless of economic status. The not-for-profit Breakwater Sailing Center, which includes Breakwater Yacht Club, is the organizer of the Sag Harbor Cup. Breakwater offers scholarships and low-cost sailing lessons to both youth and adults, to make a lifelong love of sailing easy for anyone to attain. For the 40th anniversary of the Cup, Breakwater is asking crews to compete not only for the fastest times, but also for the most money raised for its community sailing programs. This new fundraising prize will be known as the Founders Cup. Which boat will take it home this year?

Founded in 1988 with the simple goal of bringing regularly scheduled sailboat racing to Sag Harbor, Breakwater has since grown to become a vital presence on the East End. It’s open membership policy and non-profit mission of teaching sailing to the wider community has established Breakwater as a comfortable and welcoming alternative to private yacht clubs in the area.

From those early days, the club has grown both literally and physically. Breakwater’s first “clubhouse” was a tent and a 40 ft trailer on borrowed property. We now have a modest but picturesque permanent clubhouse and docks on property leased from the Village of Sag Harbor. This is our headquarters from which we host all our programs and events [remember the original site was in the Sag Harbor Yacht Yard next door]

Over the years, children who first learned to sail in Breakwater’s Youth Sailing Program have grown up, become parents themselves and are now sharing their love of sailing with the next generation. Breakwater, too, has extended its mission of community support by sponsoring sailing programs to reach adults just learning to sail, high school students, at risk youth and cancer patients.

At Breakwater, sailing is who we are, whether we are cruisers, racers or people who just want to connect with others in our community and build relationships.

Come join us… we’d loved to have you.
