Mohonk Preserve Rescue Ranger Appeal

The ranger team has your back – do you have theirs?

$3,265 raised

Accidents strike when least expected… our rangers are trained to help you.

Whether it's a 20-foot fall, or a sprained ankle on the trail – our rangers are trained to help you.

At Mohonk Preserve, you are backed by a trained team of professional rangers who are prepared to respond when the need arises. From the cliffs to the trails, we’ll transport you to safety when you need it most.

Now, we need your help to be ready when you need us most. The gear, training, and readiness that might save a life tomorrow relies on your support, today.

Thanks to a generous $40,000 grant, we want to enhance our rescue operations for the many emergencies which occur at Mohonk Preserve throughout the year.

But to fully leverage this opportunity, we are working to raise an additional $15,000 in matching funds from our members and supporters.

Will you stand with us? The ranger team has your back – do you have theirs?

Rangers in Action: Biking

A visitor suffered a serious injury while riding his bike when he lost control, flew over the handlebars, and crashed. Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet. Rangers arrived quickly and found him on the ground with significant facial lacerations, a deformity in the shoulder and a head wound that left him disoriented. His hands were also potentially injured and covered in dirt. The Rangers immediately assessed the situation and recognized that EMS care was urgently needed due to the severity of his injuries and his age. They radioed for EMS assistance and, to speed up the rescue, they efficiently improvised a litter using gear from the truck and sticks. The EMS team met the Rangers at the trailhead with the visitor. The Rangers gave a detailed report about the visitor’s condition, and he was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. Thanks to the Rangers' quick thinking and resourcefulness, the visitor received the help he needed in a timely manner. Photo by Volunteer Photographer Jane Vecchione

Rangers In Action

All Climbing related accidents at the Preserve are documented each year in a unique publication from The American Alpine Club (AAC). Since 1948, AAC has documented the year's most teachable climbing accidents, providing invaluable lessons to climbers and mountaineers.

Pete Takeda - Editor, Accidents in North American Climbing says “Our work would not be possible without the selfless work of individual climbers, regional correspondents, and annual reporting from entities like the Mohonk Preserve. While Mohonk's accident and rescue efforts reflect only a small part of their conservation, education, and outreach work, they make a big difference. It's not a stretch of the imagination to state that their efforts help save lives.”
