Wayfarers Event: Young Prairie SNA Seed Collecting
Event Details
Young Prairie is an example of a wet mesic prairie with a rare plant community. We will collect seeds from the native plants here for the start of a 40-acre prairie planting at nearby Bluff Creek SNA. The planting will be converting current agricultural fields to prairie to reduce fertilizer runoff into the site, create a buffer area, and expand the prairie.
We’ll help you identify a couple of different plant species so you can locate and collect seeds from them.
The group will be walking around off trail in a remnant prairie so wear hiking boots (waterproof may be helpful if heavy rains occur recently) and long pants.
When: Sunday, September 20th from 9am - 12pm
Where: Young Prairie SNA
Cost: Free!
Restrooms: There will not be an available restroom on site. Nearest bathroom will be at the John Muir trails about 2 miles away.
