My Birdathon Page
Birding is one of those hobbies that...really sneak up on you! I lived with my grandmother for a year and every day we sat at the window and watched the birds in her garden together while drinking our morning tea.
I am going to put my passion for birds into action by helping a local conservation organization, Seattle Audubon. This spring, I will be participating in Birdathon. It's like a walkathon, but I count birds instead of walking laps. I will be, over the course of Birdathon, counting how many different bird species I can see and hear in my own backyard!
Together, with other Birdathon participants, we will raise funds to fuel Seattle Audubon's mission to advocate and organize for cities where people and birds thrive.
Please support me by making a donation through my fundraising page. Your gift of $10, $25, or $50 provides resources for urban conservation, environment education, and community science programs in our local community. Every dollar counts towards my goal! Thank you.

We had a flutter of bush tits visiting the feeder the last couple days! And though I forgot to record it earlier, we have had a mated pair of Northern Flickers nesting in a dead tree on our bank. Last weekend, the tree suddenly snapped right where their nest was and fell down the bank a bit. Our landlords have a tree service coming out and I don’t know if they are going to insist on taking the tree down—though because it is on a bank that might be a lengthy process. That day we noticed the flickers come back but I didn’t know the status of their nest. Sure enough the next day they were going in and out of a whole at the top (we couldn’t see that angle of the top of the tree) and continued excavating. I don’t know if they had already laid eggs, or plan to. And I don’t know if they will be able to lay and hatch the eggs before the tree gets taken down. I will try to call a local wildlife center to get their advice, since I know the Flicker numbers have been declining.

A quick update! To add to this list this morning I saw a Downy woodpecker and I a type of hawk but I’m really not sure which one I didn’t get the longest look at it.

Things have been busy, but I made sure to sit on my deck for the last couple mornings and see who I see and who I hear! These are the bird species I’ve counted so far in our little backyard:
American robin, song sparrow, chestnut-backed chickadee, pleated woodpecker, dark-eyed junco, red-breasted nuthatch, Bewick wren, towhee, American crow, house finch, black-capped chickadee, bald eagle!!, Anna hummingbird.
