My mission: A more diverse birding community
One of the most meaningful things I have done over the past few years is my work with Golden Gate Bird Alliance (GGBA). I have been passionate about facilitating a space where people like me, my friends and my colleagues, who are younger, queerer, browner and otherwise underrepresented in that community, would feel comfortable exploring birds and the outdoors. Three years ago I started leading field trips with diverse co-leaders, 2 years ago I started teaching classes, last year I helped launch and advise the Birding For Everyone Fellowship, and this year I passed off that advisor role to an alumna of the program and am continuing to mentor folks from that program as I return to teaching. GGBA believed in me as I pushed the org and myself to create communities we hadn't had before. That costs money and I would like to ask for your help to continue to support this work to diversify GGBA's constituency and the Bay Area birding community. Your donations will support the Birding For Everyone Fellowship, which annually supports 10 underrepresented emerging bird leaders to delve into their learning, leadership, and community, in order to secure its position as a long-term program at GGBA.
Please support me by giving to my page. Every dollar counts! Thank you.

I was out this morning at Valle Vista with my 2nd to last bird class of the spring. I am grateful to each and every member of the class for what they bring. And to alumni who come back to visit (shout out to Ezekial) or signup for the whole class (hey carpool buddy Jen). It started cool and foggy but we ended up with a beautiful day. The light hit just right on the iridescence plumage of the tree swallows and we enjoyed the bright blue bill of the ruddy duck. We made our full set of swallows and herons in the class with today's sightings. And so many folks were fantastic contributors bringing their skills and enthusiasm. Thanks everyone!

Yesterday was my first field trip of my class beginning birding in the nesting season We went to visit the Heron and Egret rookeries in downtown Oakland and enjoyed the knowledge that Alison of the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory shared. We watched a newly fledged heron catch a sparrow to eat, and a nestling fall out of the tree, which Alison captured to bring for rehabilitation to International Bird Rescue. It was great to see the participants building community with each other and opening their eyes to the bird activity all around them even in such an urban environment. Thank you everyone for supporting my work!

Today was the last day of the class Skylar (a former student of mine and fellow) and I taught to folks who applied to the fellowship this year but there weren't enough spots for. It was a magical morning at Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park as we watched a Cooper's Hawk on the nest, the elusive Pacific-Slope Flycatcher sing in plain sight right in front of us, and a Chestnut-backed Chickadee carry food into a cavity. But even more delightful was the company. Thanks to GGBA for taking our suggestion to let us teach this class and hopefully "build the bench" for next year's fellowship program.

A spontaneous outing with RD and AL at Cesar Chavez yielded some fantastic sightings such as two red winged blackbird males singing to each other just a few feet apart, black oystercatchers displaying and a barn owl bringing a rodent back to its babies. Along with the normal ducks and sparrows doing their thing. It was magical!
