Team Captain of Chirp Chasers
Support Alison Sazama in the Great Wisconsin Birdathon 2023!
As I have for the past five years, I am once again strapping on my binoculars and dusting off my bird book to participate in the Great Wisconsin Birdathon 2023!
As founder and board member of the Chippewa County Land Conservancy, I am proud of the fact that CCLC preserves critical, natural habitat for Wisconsin's native birds. We continue to learn about the positive impact our conservation properties have and the Birdathon is a great way to support our efforts. Funds go toward outreach activities such as field trips and continued stewardship of our protected lands.
Participating nonprofits in the Birdathon keep 50% of the funds they raise and last year the Chirp Chasers raised $1,750! Our goal this year is to raise $2000.
My individual challenge is to raise $800 and view 115 bird species! Please consider a donation to either me or the team. It’s easy and no amount is too small! Even $10 will help us achieve our goal. Just click the donate button above and you will be taken to my fundraising page. It only takes a couple of minutes and the birds and I thank you!

Great Wisconsin Birdathon 2023 – Chirp Chaser’s recap
The 2023 Birdathon is nearing completion and the Chirp Chasers have had a stellar year thanks to all of our contributors. We can’t thank you enough! We raised $3,725.00 and once again emphasize the importance of your contributions to our organization and the birds.
A special shout out to our team members, Liam Kraft, Kathy Mehls, Jeff Brown and Kristi Lund. We tallied an incredible 142 species which is our all- time best.
Summer like temperatures came fast after a long cool April. Interestingly, several highlights came from backyards. A Solitary Vireo, which is rare in the Chippewa Valley and an unexpected and exciting observation from a team members’ bedroom window at midnight – the repeated call of the Eastern Whip-poor-will. The beautiful image below of the Northern Shoveler came in the early morning hours at sunrise and several members of the team spotted a pair of Northern Waterthrushes, plain little brown birds often difficult to observe.
The team was delighted to have Liam Kraft join the birding adventure. A fifth grader, Liam’s enthusiasm is contagious and it’s wonderful to see young people getting involved. Liam captured on film a shot of White Pelicans on the island at Lake Wissota as they stopped over. Liam admitted it was hard to pick a favorite sighting but decided on that of a Worm-eating Warbler and wild Mute Swans.

Hello friends!
The Chirp Chasers Birdathon week is over and although I didn't quite hit my goal of 100 birds for those dates (May 14-20), I did surpass my goal of raising $800!! This is so excellent and again a big thank you to everyone who has donated!! Here is the list of birds I've seen during the week of May 14-20. I will note that if I include all of the species I've seen since I started birding in late March this year the tally goes up to 122 birds! And the Birdathon doesn't officially end until June 15th so there is still time to add to my list and still time to donate as well!
Here's my list:
White Pelican, Herring Gull, Canada Goose, Mallard, Redhead, Ring Necked Duck, Wood Duck, Bufflehead, Blue Winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Pied Billed Grebe, Wild Turkey, Bald Eagle, Osprey, Red Tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Merlin, Northern Harrier, Vulture, Sandhill Crane, Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Mourning Dove, Ruby Throated Hummingbird, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Black Capped Chickadee, Eastern Phoebe, Least Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Wood Peewee, Eastern Kingbird, Solitary Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Red Eyed Vireo, Blue Jay, American Crow, N. Rough Winged Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, House Wren, Sedge Wren, Blue Gray Gnatcatcher, Black Capped Chickadee, White Breasted Nuthatch, Tufted Titmouse, Veery, Swainson's Thrush, Eastern Bluebird, American Robin, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Cedar Waxwing, Blue winged Warbler, Chestnut sided Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Pine Warbler, Orange Crowned Warbler, Northern Parula, Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart, Northern Water Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, Bobolink, Indigo Bunting, Eastern Meadowlark, European Starling, Common Grackle, Red Winged Blackbird, Brewers Blackbird, Cowbird, Orchard Oriole, Baltimore Oriole, House Finch, American Goldfinch.
By the way, the Chirp Chasers still have other members who haven't tallied their lists so as a team we may still hit our goal of 100 species! I'll keep you posted and hope to send some pictures as well.
Cheers!

Your Donation Makes a Difference For Birds
Donations made to the Great Wisconsin Birdathon support the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin’s Bird Protection Fund, which has given out over $1.3 million towards Wisconsin’s highest priority bird conservation projects since its inception in 2009.
Whether it's creating Piping Plover habitat, rearing Whooping Crane chicks, spreading awareness about Connecticut Warblers, supporting community initiatives for bird-friendly neighborhoods, engaging new and underrepresented voices in the birding community, building impactful collaborations to protect Wisconsin's Important Bird Areas, or protecting our neotropical migrants on their long migratory journeys to Central America... the Bird Protection Fund is there to help.
Your donations make this work possible. Thank you for supporting on-the-ground conservation and being there #ForTheBirds!
