I'm participating in the 5th Annual HCU Race for Research, a virtual event! By being a HCU Hero, my desire is to help spread hope in the lives of approximately 1 in 200,000 patients with HCU.

All proceeds from this race benefit HCU Network America Research Funds.

Background: For those that may not know -- my two oldest children, Virgil (7) and Annie (4) have a dietary condition called Homocystinuria (HCU for short), which severely limits the foods they can eat and their protein allowance each day. Since they lack an enzyme that breaks down proteins from food, they have to supplement their diet with a 'synthesized' protein formula each day (drinking 25oz per day).

The ask: The goal for Team Hawkins / PwC this year is to raise $5,000, which would be a great haul for HCU Network America. Because of how rare HCU is, there are not a lot of patients nationwide and fundraising is a challenge! The annual fundraising goal each year is only $75k. The main purpose of those funds each year is to give grants to smart doctors who are working on new treatments and/or a cure for HCU.
