Participating in Lowcountry Golf Marathon

Jul 15, 2024

No better excuse. No greater cause.

The date is set: July 15th. That's when I will be teeing it up at our annual Lowcountry Golf Marathon supporting the Folds of Honor.

What's a golf marathon you may ask? A golf marathon consists of playing as many holes as possible in one day. I will tee off at daybreak (6:00am) and play until I no longer can see my golf ball (8:20pm). That's right over 14 hours of continuous golf! Think 267 holes (14 rounds of 18) with an average round taking under an hour.

So why this craziness on what will likely be the hottest day of the year in Charleston? This is an event to raise money for Folds of Honor. Folds of Honor's mission is to provide educational scholarships to the spouses and children of fallen and disabled service members. I can't think of a better cause to associate myself to. Our freedom doesn't come free and these scholarships are such an impactful way to honor the sacrifices made for it.

I’d like to humbly ask you to rally behind this cause with me. You can do so in 2 ways:

1. Option 1 (preferred) is to place bets on my performance that day. You could pledge to donate 25 cents per hole I play, or $1 per birdie, something special for a hole in one (amounts of your choosing). My biggest goal is to get to 267 holes, one more than last year (which was in the top 5 in the country for most holes played in a Folds of Honor marathon)

Example: you have in mind to donate $50. You pledge $1 per birdie up to $50 max. If I make 49 birdies I will email you after the event and you donate that amount. If I make 70 birdies I will email you after the event and you donate $50.

Pledges make a big difference in driving the best performance during the marathon. Below are some stats to give you a frame of reference and help you decide.

  • Holes Played: 266

  • 64 birdies

  • 1 eagle

  • Longest putt made: 39 feet (A fun bet is $1 per foot for the longest putt made.)

HOW TO PLEDGE / PLACE YOUR BETS: Simply email me (jmbusuttil@gmail.com) with the details. I will contact you after we tally the results of the marathon with how things shake out.

> Option 2: You can choose to donate now through this page: Click on the Donate Now button on this page!

The folded flag is a constant reminder of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It inspires us to help equip and educate their loved ones in need of our support.

Thanks in advance for rallying with me to raise money for these scholarships!

WE DID IT! Thanks to the best team of volunteers and the absence of thunderstorms 267 holes were played yesterday, one more than last year. That's 14 full rounds plus 15 holes. Start time was 6:01 am and end time around 8:30pm (too tired to check at that point).

It was the hottest golf marathon to date with heat index of 115 degrees. In the bunkers it felt like 167 degrees. I don't think I could have been drinking more water and electrolytes...but still not enough - I weighed 3.5 pounds less this morning than yesterday.

It will take a week or so to grab all the stats and sort out pledges. If you haven't already there is still time to donate! Thanks in advance for considering doing so.

...off to drink more water lol.
