Strong Alone. Unstoppable Together.

Being a cancer survivor means uncertainty.

Being a cancer survivor means anxiety.

Being a cancer survivor means fear.

Being a cancer survivor means hope.

In 2020, when I first learned that I had kidney cancer, I made a promise to myself that I would share my story on social media—openly, honestly, authentically. I made this promise because I knew that if I kept it bottled inside, I would only spiral. More importantly, though, I made this promise because I knew I wasn’t alone, but I didn’t know who was around. It’s a rare disease, after all, and a rare disease often means little research, little funding, and less exposure. I needed to find people who understood, and I needed to understand our collective experience.

A personal promise turned into visible advocacy. And my survivorship is now so inextricably linked to patient advocacy, that I don’t know how to do anything else. I continue to take part in KCA’s 82K Challenge because I want to foster hope, awareness, and funding for kidney cancer research and support. Because I want to help change lives.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far to the Greater Austin team! Your support helps fund crucial research into kidney cancer, allowing us to learn more about the disease and find better treatments.

The Greater Austin team is a mix of friends and strangers, but we all people who believe strongly in the cause. And the cause is personal to me--I am a survivor of stage 1 chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (CHRCC), which accounts for 5% of kidney cancer cases. Unlike clear cell, CHRCC has fewer treatment options, and the prognosis is poor when in later stages. We need to change this reality.

In less than 8 weeks, the team will get together to cycle and lift for kidney cancer research. Your contributions help fuel us.
