Join me to support kids with cancer
Two years ago Glenn sat down next to me on the bus to the start of Cycle Oregon. A week later we rode together across the finish line, with a number of other riders with the Candlelighters Ride for a Child team, having covered 445 miles in a week. Glenn and I had complementary riding styles, and rode together most days. And I also got to know, and ride with, a number of the other riders as well. It was a great group, supporting a great cause.
Two years later, and I am now joining this group to help with the Candlelighter's missing - raising funds and awareness for local kids with cancer and their families. Every dollar pledged will go toward the mission of Candlelighters For Children With Cancer, a non-profit organization that provides life-changing programs and services for families facing cancer across Oregon and SW Washington. 350 miles since early August, which 305 were over seven days in Oregon (five days with Cycle Oregon and Candlelighters, two days on my own around Bend, Oregon as a warmup). Most of this was road biking, including two days climbing up to Crater Lake National Park to ride around the Rim.

Only 84 miles on the bike since the last update - but a lot of time working on the local mountain bike trails to get them ready for Mountain Bike Racing two weeks ago. The miles were a split between road riding (on my favorite route near my brother's cottage), and mountain biking on the local trails (including a couple times on the not quite ready for primetime trail we are still working on - being on the trail crew means you know how to find it when the trail entrance has not yet been cut).

Two road rides in the past week. It started with a short 22 mile warm-up ride (and confirm that bicycling with six stiches in my back was going to be okay) on Friday morning. This was followed by a grueling 62 miles on Saturday, in extreme heat (90+) and windy conditions. This was the annual Multiple Sclerosis fundraising ride in Chicagoland, a ride I have done for most of the last 12 years. This year the forecast forced the cancellation of the 100 mile route, which was good as most of the last 20 miles of the route was into headwinds.

I did a 66 mile road ride yesterday (with 2800 feet of climbing, which is pretty hard to achieve in the flat Chicago suburbs). Perfect weather to get some road riding in (sunny, but only in the mid-60's most of the morning, with no wind). This compliments my trail riding on the fat tire bike (heavier, and thus better workout). Looking forward to joining the crew in September!

About Candlelighters
From diagnosis through treatment and beyond, Candlelighters provide programs that meet the needs of the whole family facing childhood cancer. Your support provides:
$25: Fills the gas tank so families can get their child to the hospital for essential cancer treatment.
$50: Fills a grocery bag of a family who may have had to leave a job to care for their child
$100: Helps a family of four get essential food for several days or gas for several trips to the hospital for required treatments.
$250: Fills the hospital pantry for one week, while families are in the hospital with their child who is receiving cancer treatment.
