Support our team in the Great Wisconsin Birdathon!

Team Yes We Pelican! is back for our third year of the Birdathon! We represent the Feminist Bird Club-Madison Chapter. Can we spot a lot of birds, raise funds for bird conservation, and build an inclusive birding community all at the same time? Yes We Pelican!

Last year, we fundraised to put Birding Backpacks at all nine locations of the Madison Public Library. Learn how you can check one out! 🎒

By donating to our team, you're supporting the Bird Protection Fund, which funds Wisconsin's highest priority bird conservation projects and our chapter. Fifty percent of what we raise will go towards expanding our Birding Backpack program with Madison Public Library.

Every dollar counts when it comes to helping our birds and ensuring that everyone has access to the joy birds bring! No donation is too small. Thank you for considering!

🐦 Wanna bird with us? We'll be hosting birding outings around Madison all day long on May 7th! Sign up here!

Spring migration has slowed, and I have been birding less. I continue to go out when I can, and see or hear many familiar favorites. Baltimore Orioles continue to delight me, along with Common Yellowthroats, Yellow Warblers, Great Crested Flycatchers, and Green Herons.

I have heard so much more than I have seen! Many warblers, vireos, and flycatchers have gone unseen. They tease me and my neck aches from strain after hours of trying to catch a glimpse. I've started to enjoy listening more, and focus less on my determination to visually ID everyone.

In two weeks, I travel Up North, and am excited for a change in scenery. I hope to see a palm warbler, common loon, eagle, osprey, and perhaps hear some owls. I will be tooting my new Nocs Binoculars, which are like wearing glasses compared to my old and well loved pair. I can't wait to bird on the lake with my partners and the wise child.

The joy of birding continues and adventures abound!

My birding efforts have slowed a bit with other life efforts taking priority (garden!), but I've managed to see a few new exciting species! I saw a quiet Magnolia Warbler feeding. I was serenaded by Wood thrushes. Hummingbirds have begun to visit my feeder! May is not over, so there is still time to explore!

I've continued to bird whenever I can - mornings before I have any commitments, lunch breaks, and evenings after work. I've been out birding solo, along with my tools like binoculars, Merlin ID, eBird, iBirdPro, and my good ole Peterson Field Guide. I miss so much; Merlin ID points this out. It's been great to have a tool to help me confirm what I think I am seeing and help me figure out what I am hearing. Today, I was able to add three new specifies to my 2023 list this way (Tennessee Warbler, Orchard Oriole, and Swamp Sparrow). I was determined to see a Common Yellowthroat today. I've been hearing them everyone, but the bandit remained elusive. He gave me a great glimpse today on the wooded edge of a prairie. I heard at least four different Tennessee Warblers today, though only set eyes on one. Their olive backs blend so well into a lime green background of leaves set in a dimly lot, cloudy sky. Alas, it was a wonderful day for birds. I had to be pulled away from the woods to tend to a shared garden.

Your Donation Makes a Difference For Birds

Donations made to the Great Wisconsin Birdathon support the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin’s Bird Protection Fund, which has given out over $1.3 million towards Wisconsin’s highest priority bird conservation projects since its inception in 2009.

Whether it's creating Piping Plover habitat, rearing Whooping Crane chicks, spreading awareness about Connecticut Warblers, supporting community initiatives for bird-friendly neighborhoods, engaging new and underrepresented voices in the birding community, building impactful collaborations to protect Wisconsin's Important Bird Areas, or protecting our neotropical migrants on their long migratory journeys to Central America... the Bird Protection Fund is there to help.

Your donations make this work possible. Thank you for supporting on-the-ground conservation and being there #ForTheBirds!
