Why I Bird For Point Blue

I am thrilled to be participating in Point Blue's 2024 Rich Stallcup Bird-A-Thon! Now in its 46th year, this event is an opportunity to connect, learn, and grow as a nature-loving community and to raise conservation funds to secure a healthy planet.

I have been birding for almost 20 of those years as an intern, biologist, educator, and now communicator with Point Blue. I have been a Looker (and always will be :)), a STRAWling, A Throttle Thrasher, A Common Mer, and more. I lead the Virtual Vultures and Fledgling teams to help welcome in new birders and nature and bird lovers of all levels to the conservation and Point Blue community. It brings me joy to be out in nature enjoying, appreciating, teaching, and learning with others. Raising funds for conservation while doing so is the cherry on top!

The goal is to identify as many bird species as possible in a 24-hour period between September 15 and October 15. Please consider helping me reach my fundraising goal by making a donation or by pledging a dollar amount based on the number of bird species I see.

Thank you for your generous support and help in spreading the word. To learn more about Point Blue Conservation Science and their climate-smart conservation initiatives, visit their website at www.pointblue.org.

The Fledglings Bird-A-Thon was a hit this morning! We started off with a Red-breasted Sapsucker on a palm tree trunk, rapidly followed by a Peregrine Falcon flyover, then an American Kestrel mobbing a Red-Tailed Hawk! Whew! What a kick off! It was not surprising to see such great activity with native-habitat-filled grounds of the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation Environmental Center, our hosts for the walk! And after the first light rain of the fall. We ended the day with American goldfinches, a Western Fence Lizard, and the sounds of roosting Mexican free-tailed bats. And of course lots of great sightings in between.
