Bay Birding Challenge For the 2023 Golden Gate Audubon Birdathon

I'm excited to join this incredible initiative! Golden Gate Audubon's mission to inspire people to protect Bay Area birds is very important to me and I'm proud to help them make a difference. Please support me by giving to my page. Every dollar counts! Thank you.

I'm excited to be the newest member of the East Bay Team taking on the San Francisco Team in the Bay Challenge. On April 1st our team of 8 avid birders will do our best to execute on our plan to identify at least 150 species. We'll race to roughly 10 locations to bird, starting in the Oakland Hills, then down to bird the rich habitat along bay and then east to pick up some valley specialties before the competition ends at sundown.

I started birding as a child and my passion has only grown over the intervening decades. I’m passionate about birds and that’s why raising money for GGAS via this page. As a teacher I developed the only year-long, high school ornithology class in the state. Now, as a retiree, I have given myself the title of Ornithangelist as I continue my mission to educate about and protect birds.

Since moving to the Bay Area back in May, I have completed the Master Birder Program, I am a member of the Bald Eagle Monitoring Team for the nesting Alameda Bald Eagles, I am leading field trips for schools and community groups, I have become Co-Chair of the East Bay Conservation Committee and I am a member of the Youth Advisory Committee for GGAS.

This freindly compettion allows me an opportunity to financially support the work that GGAS does annually, including:

• adult ed classes that feature 20–25 offerings and 400 participants. I am teaching two of these classes this spring;

• free monthly speaker series that attracts an average of 100 people per month;

• our flagship Eco-Ed program, serving Title 1 (low-income) students in San Francisco, Oakland and Richmond for 24 years;

• our habitat restoration program that sponsors nearly 100 events with 500 volunteers restoring and maintaining habitat at 8 Bay Area sites;

• the Christmas Bird Counts we sponsor and organize in San Francisco, Oakland and Richmond. Over the past two years I have participated in three CBC's in the East Bay;

• our three conservation committees (San Francisco, East Bay, and Alameda) that advocate for birds and wildlife around the Bay Area.

Won’t you join us in preserving birds and their habitats and making them accessible to all? You can pledge a set amount to support the work of GGAS or you can pledge an amount per bird--$1 per bird seems like a reasonable amount to us, but any amount you can afford is much appreciated!

Thank you for your support.

We were at it from dawn to dusk and found 160 species of birds! We had fun, we had frustration, but ultimately we triumphed in our accomplishment of finding our precious East Bay had so many species to offer and the knowledge that our antics helped raise money for a cause we all believe in! What an amazing and beautifully diverse ecosystem. Thank youfor pledging to help keep it that way.

Birded Mosely Marsh on the west end of Alameda. A nice little hidden spot that had Sora, Green Heron, Ring-necked Ducks and Wilson's Snipe. Fun to find them so close to home.
