I'm so happy to be on staff of Seattle Audubon (soon to be Birds Connect Seattle) for the last 2.5 years. This spring, I will be participating in Birdathon. It's like a walkathon, but I count birds instead of walking laps. I will be going out on a single Big Day to see how many different bird species I can see and hear.
Together, with other Birdathon participants, we will raise funds to fuel Seattle Audubon's mission to advocate and organize for cities where people and birds thrive.
Please support me by making a donation through my fundraising page. Your gift of $250, $100, or $50 provides resources for urban conservation, environment education, and community science programs in our local community. Every dollar counts towards my goal! Thank you.

Here is the full list of species I counted yesterday. My favorite sighting was two hummingbird chicks that had grown too large to fit in their nest anymore. I was also excited to see my first in life Common Yellowthroat. I had seen photos of it before so knew what it was as soon as I spotted it a few feet from the trail.

Yesterday I went out with my team, the Honeynut Vireos to do out big day bird count. We spent the morning at Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, and then a stop over in Lakewood for some additional birds. I completed my count by adding a few more species I spotted from the freeway, or in my yard at home. In total, I saw or heard 43 different species yesterday. I'm sure there were more, but I'll need to start practicing my birding by ear skills a little more.

Tomorrow is the day for our bird count! I'm headed down to Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in Pierce County with my coworkers. The refuge has lots of different habitats so we should be able to spot some shorebirds along the coastline, as well as birds in the grassland areas, forest, and marsh/wetland. There is a resident Great-horned owl there I'm hoping to see, and a few colorful warblers would be nice as well. The refuge has recorded at least 250 species of birds, 95 species of fish, 7 species of amphibians, and 60 insect species so it should be a nature-filled day. Wish us luck!
