Why October Saves Is So Important To Me

Hi, my name is Hunter Redden and this is my third year participating in the October Saves Goalie Challenge. I will be making saves for a new team this season, the Minuteman Flames (2014 White) EHF Gold division team, and have set the bar higher this year for my own personal development as well as for my fundraising efforts. Last year I was able to raise over $6,500 for this incredible initiative, and I don’t want to stop there. This season I set my personal goal at $7,500 for this incredibly important fundraising opportunity, that has even more meaning for me this year. With overwhelming support I was able to achieve my initial goal of $7,500 only halfway through the fundraising campaign, so I set the bar even higher to $10,000.

I initially chose to become part of the October Saves family in 2024 to raise important cancer research funding to help make a difference in honor of my close friend and hockey teammate Seppe Struppa, who lost his 13-month battle with a DMG brain tumor in October 2024. I saw his family navigate treatments and clinical trials to extend his life for as long as possible before he gained his wings. I continue to participate in his honor.

Since then, my mother Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2024 and my stepmother Lindsay was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2024, and this amplified my desire to participate even more. October Saves gives me the opportunity to make every save count. Each and every save I made last season helped raise important funding to continue ever important research for new treatments for these terrible diseases.

My mom is currently stable and thankfully doing well after months of intensive chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery last year, but she still needs close monitoring to make sure her cancer doesn’t return. My stepmom’s diagnosis has been hard for me to process because pancreatic cancer has an incredibly low survival rate. Over the past year and a half I have seen her go through aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments, but unfortunately her tumor didn’t respond to treatments like we hoped it would. Her tumor is intertwined around multiple blood vessels that make it impossible to be surgically removed. My stepmom has recently started a clinical trial medication with hopes that it will extend her survival while giving her a better quality of life, but unfortunately she has had a lot of complications recently and has spent almost the entire month of August in the hospital.

The funding that is raised through the October Saves is so important for people like my mom and stepmom in order to develop early detection methods, to make advancements to cancer treatments, and to extend life beyond diagnosis for as long as possible. Both my mom and stepmom have undergone treatments through Dana-Farber and October Saves is a big financial supporter of Dana-Farber through the goalie challenge initiative.

As a 12-year-old boy who loves both my mom and stepmom fiercely, I want both of them in my life for as long as possible. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and have a better understanding as to why the October Saves initiative is so important to me. If you can find it in your heart or within your means to donate to my page, it would mean a lot to me.  No matter how big or how small your donation, every dollar for cancer research counts!

Tonight was a skater centered practice working on board play, so I saw less action in practice than normal. I got my new pink mask straps installed. A big thank you for to Chuck Fabio at Goalie County for sending them for me to wear during October Saves. I can’t believe the month is almost over, it has gone by so fast. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through my fundraising so far, it has been by far, my best year yet 💜🩷

My Flames team had a very strong showing today against an undefeated rival Northstars team. Going into the game they were 4-0 on the season. We played a fast, back and forth game and gave up an own goal with 45 seconds left to go down 4-5, which ended up being the final score. I played one of my best games of the season stopping 42/47 shots. I am so happy with how the team played in front of me today, they battled right to the final whistle.

I was supposed to split the time in the crease with my partner Dom today, but he had a last minute minor injury and ended up not feeling well enough to play today. I am sad to report that my goalie partner Dom’s grandfather lost his battle with cancer earlier this week. I am so happy to have Dom fundraising for October Saves with me this year, he’s absolutely crushing it!

I added another 49 saves tonight in practice during 3v3 scrimmage, 1 on 1 drills and 5 puck to end practice. We were getting prepared to face a strong undefeated Northstars team tomorrow. Last weekend was a tough loss in the championship game of the Comets Cup in Utica, NY. The team is extra motivated to get back to work tomorrow.

My Minuteman Flames team played in the Utica Comets Cup tournament this weekend in Utica, NY. This was by far the best tournament and best parity I’ve experienced so far. I got to know my new teammates so much better and had a really great weekend. After going 3-0 on Friday and Saturday to move into the championship game today, I knew we would have a battle with the Lewis County Cobras, as we had a hard fought 3-1 win against them in game two of the tournament. My goalie partner Dom and I split the time in net evenly, alternating starts and we both played very well. I only allowed one goal through four split games this weekend which happened to be a strangely tipped puck that hopped over my back and went in the net in the championship game. I’m really proud of how the team played, and while we had fun and played hard, it feels disappointing coming up short in the championship game. My new teammates have accepted me and in a short time we have built a very strong relationship. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the season takes us. I’m happy to be back home and am feeling more motivated for Lake Placid next month. I may not have won the championship, but I added another 38 hard fought saves in my fight against cancer. Thank you all for your support so far.

I added another 47 saves to my total tonight during 3v3 inter-squad scrimmage and 6 puck to end practice. The team was putting in a great effort as we prepared for the Utica Comets Cup tournament in Utica, NY, beginning on Friday. I am looking forward to adding many more saves with my goalie partner and October Saves teammate this weekend, as we try to win the tournament against several teams from NY and NJ.
